Collection of nasopharyngeal specimen

The nasopharynx is the anatomical location where the highest amount of SARS-CoV-2 virus is found, and the best test sensitivity can be achieved. Nasopharyngeal swabbing is, therefore, the standard procedure for COVID-19 diagnosis in most countries and can be used for both PCR and antigen tests. However, nasopharyngeal swabbing is technically challenging to perform and can cause discomfort for the patient. A flexible, thin-shafted swab is used for the swabbing.
